Introduction

The quick improvised baklava is a delightful treat that captures the essence of the traditional Middle Eastern dessert, adapted for a faster preparation time. This version features layers of delicate phyllo dough alternated with a flavorful blend of chopped nuts, such as walnuts, pistachios, or almonds. The nuts are generously seasoned with ground cinnamon to infuse the filling with warmth and depth.

Crafting this dessert is a straightforward process, involving the layering of phyllo sheets brushed with melted butter to create a crispy, golden crust. The nut mixture is scattered between the layers, offering a satisfying crunch and nutty essence in each bite.

After a brief stint in the oven, the baklava emerges with a satisfyingly crisp texture, reminiscent of the traditional version. In place of a complex syrup, this improvised recipe employs a simple yet indulgent glaze made from a mixture of granulated sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract. This glaze is drizzled over the baked baklava, infusing it with sweetness and glossiness that enhances its visual appeal.

The result is a quick and delightful rendition of baklava that captures the essence of the traditional treat in a fraction of the time. While simplifying the process, this improvised recipe still manages to offer a pleasing combination of textures, flavors, and the familiar nutty essence that baklava enthusiasts adore.

Ingredients

  • Phyllo Dough          1 pack
  • Chopped Nuts         1 cup
  • Melted Butter          1/2 cup
  • Ground Cinnamon  1 tsp
  • Granulated Sugar    1/2 cup
  • Water                       1/2 cup
  • Honey                      1/2 cup
  • Vanilla Extract         1 tsp

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix together the chopped nuts and ground cinnamon. Set aside.
  3. Brush a baking dish with melted butter.
  4. Lay a sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush with more melted butter. Repeat this step, layering about 5-6 sheets of phyllo dough.
  5. Sprinkle a generous layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo layers.
  6. Continue layering phyllo sheets, brushing each with melted butter, and adding more nut mixture every few layers. Aim for about 4-5 layers of nuts in total.
  7. Finish with another 5-6 layers of phyllo dough, brushing each with butter.
  8. Using a sharp knife, carefully cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until the baklava is golden brown and crisp.
  10. While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine granulated sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
  11. Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over it. Make sure to pour the syrup evenly over the entire surface.
  12. Allow the baklava to cool and soak up the syrup for a few hours before serving.

Cool it,
Cut it,
Enjoy it.
