Ingredients

  • Crushed Oreo Cookies    1 1/2 cups
  • Unsalted Butter               1/4 cup
  • Cream Cheese                 3 packs
  • Granulated Sugar            1 cup
  • Vanilla Extract                1 tsp
  • Eggs                                3 large
  • Sour Cream                     1 cup
  • Chocolate Chips             1/2 cup

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C). Grease a 9-inch (23cm) springform pan.
  2. In a bowl, mix the crushed Oreo cookies and melted butter until the crumbs are evenly coated. Press the mixture firmly into the bottom of the prepared springform pan to form the crust.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth and creamy.
  4. Add the granulated sugar and vanilla extract to the cream cheese, and continue to beat until well combined.
  5. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, making sure each egg is fully incorporated before adding the next.
  6. If using, fold in the melted semi-sweet melted chocolate chips into the cheesecake batter until evenly distributed.
  7. Gently fold in the sour cream until well-mixed.
  8. Pour the cheesecake batter over the Oreo crust in the springform pan.
  9. Smooth out the top of the batter with a spatula to ensure an even surface.
  10. Bake the cheesecake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until the edges are set but the center still has a slight jiggle.
  11. Turn off the oven and leave the cheesecake inside with the oven door slightly ajar for about an hour to prevent cracking.
  12. Remove the cheesecake from the oven and let it cool completely at room temperature.
  13. Once cooled, refrigerate the cheesecake for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to set.
  14. Before serving, you can garnish the cheesecake with additional crushed Oreo cookies, chocolate shavings, or whipped cream, if desired.

What is the difference between cheesecake and no-bake cheesecake?

The main difference between regular cheesecake and no-bake cheesecake lies in their preparation and texture:

1. Preparation:
- Regular Cheesecake: Traditional cheesecake is baked in the oven. It typically starts with a crust made from graham crackers, cookies, or other similar ingredients, which is then filled with a mixture of cream cheese, sugar, eggs, and other flavorings. The cheesecake is then baked until set and cooled before serving.
- No-Bake Cheesecake: As the name suggests, no-bake cheesecake does not require baking. It is set in the refrigerator to firm up. The crust and filling are similar to the traditional version, but instead of baking, the filling is usually thickened with gelatin or stabilized with whipped cream or condensed milk to achieve a creamy texture without baking.

2. Texture:
- Regular Cheesecake: Baked cheesecakes have a dense and rich texture, with a slight crumbly crust and a smooth, creamy filling. The baking process contributes to the slightly firm and solid structure of the cheesecake.
- No-Bake Cheesecake: No-bake cheesecakes have a lighter and fluffier texture compared to baked versions. The absence of baking allows the filling to remain creamy and airy, making it easier to slice and serve.

3. Time and Effort:
- Regular Cheesecake: Baked cheesecakes require more time and effort to prepare due to the baking process, cooling, and setting time.
- No-Bake Cheesecake: No-bake cheesecakes are quicker to make since they only require mixing the ingredients and then chilling in the refrigerator to set.

4. Flavor:
- Regular Cheesecake: Baked cheesecakes often have a more pronounced, rich flavor due to the caramelization that occurs during baking.
- No-Bake Cheesecake: No-bake cheesecakes have a milder, fresher taste since the ingredients are not subjected to heat during the preparation process.

Chef's Remarks: Both types of cheesecake have their unique appeal and are equally delicious. The choice between the two depends on personal preference, time constraints, and the occasion. No-bake cheesecakes are a great option when you want a quick and easy dessert, especially during hot weather, as they don't require heating up the kitchen with the oven. On the other hand, traditional baked cheesecakes offer a classic and indulgent treat perfect for special occasions and gatherings.
